My primary goal as an economics instructor is to cultivate students' intellectual curiosity while strengthening their critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities — motivating abstract models with real-world events and discussing their assumptions and implications in context.

Unedited comments from University of Windsor course evaluations, spanning introductory, intermediate, and graduate courses (2024–2026).
Dr. Chen is truly one of the best professors I have ever had, especially in economics… His office hours consistently have a line of students waiting, simply because he is so approachable.
By far one of the best teachers I've had in any of my econ courses. The class time was incredibly efficient and I left each class with a complete understanding of the concepts.
Concepts were explained clearly and intuitively, making complex material more accessible than in many other courses… the course was eye-opening and provided a meaningful shift toward how modern empirical economics is practiced.
Every day, Professor Chen shows up to class positive and enthusiastic. You can tell he's very knowledgeable about economics, and it really helps me understand the material better.
Please keep him around, he is great for students and everybody loves him. He helps everybody and simplifies complicated material.
One of the best economics professors I've had; 10/10. Windsor, don't let him go.
Teaching Philosophy
I help students distinguish positive from normative reasoning and weigh competing economic arguments — using open-ended reflection assignments to evaluate the case for and against a policy.
Concepts become skills only through practice. In upper-level and graduate courses I build in current research and econometrics, so students gain tangible data and coding skills to tackle real problems.
I build an inclusive, collaborative classroom — encouraging participation, valuing diverse viewpoints, and making myself available to students well beyond class time.
